This video,
with explanatory leaflet, has been designed specifically
for care staff and others who have day-to-day contact
with people who have severe communication disabilities
- particularly those who use communication aids and
other forms of augmented communication.
It has been designed to be used either on its own or
as part of an induction programme for new and existing
staff. It has been made at the request of people with
severe communication difficulties, carers, therapists
and managers who felt that a video with basic information
and examples about communicating in
different situations would be useful. The video shows
some of the difficulties that may be encountered and
some suggestions for overcoming them. The materials
for this video, including all the comments and role
plays, have come from interviews with people with communication
difficulties and their carers.
The issues discussed include:
Introducing
a new member of staff
Positioning
Taking
time
How
signing and pictures can help communication
Using
pre-stored messages
The
importance of the surroundings
Talking
with friends
Handling
meetings
