These
leaflets, with an accompanying video, present some of
the findings from a 3-year study carried out with 15
families in Scotland with motor neurone disease. Joan
Murphy examined the communication of people with motor
neurone disease and their closest communication partners
in their own homes as the disease progressed.
The leaflets include suggestions to help communication
relating to 3 areas:
Strategies that help communication - The participants
in the study were keen to discuss their communication
strategies and share them with others
Augmentative and alternative communication -Technology
is not without problems but given appropriate support,
people may be able to use AAC, both low and high tech,
more effectively
The environment - simple changes to the environment
can make a huge difference to a person's ability to
communicate.
The video, made in collaboration with 2 people with
MND, illustrates some of these issues.
The research for this package was funded
by the Scottish MND Association and the Community Fund
with support from Forth Valley Primary Care Trust. The
pack costs £20 (inclusive of VAT).
