Talking Mats in the Acute Setting

Last week I was training therapy staff (mainly OTs and Physios) who work in the acute setting in London hospitals.

Some interesting issues were raised about the demand to discharge patients but also the importance of setting goals that are meaningful to patients. We talked a lot about helping patients to set their own goals and agreed that without this, patients will not understand what the point of their therapy is but with their input, patients will be more motivated and therapy will be more successful. One therapist commented “Talking Mats is a nice tool to help identify meaningful goals and nice way to structure the patient’s thinking as well as my own”.
