Exploring Spirituality with a person with Aphasia.

Following a successful launch last month of the Exploring Spirituality Resource, and to mark Aphasia Awareness month, we are sharing this story from one of our Talking Mats community of how it the Resource helped her client express what was important in her life following a stroke.

‘Talking Mats allowed a discussion around what gave their life meaning and purpose after the stroke’

I had volunteered to take part in the pilot for the Talking Mats Exploring Spirituality Resource and one of my clients agreed to come along and have a discussion about spirituality. She has Aphasia following a stroke and is verbally fluent but has difficulty processing spoken language.

My beliefs

We started with the Topic My Beliefs. My patient was very keen to highlight that she doesn’t consider herself a religious person, she doesn’t associate with any of that kind of terminology. This led us onto a broader discussion about spirituality using the Spiritual practices Topic.

Spiritual practices

Our conversation with this Topic was very thoughtful, with the lady reflecting that this was an area of real importance to her. She was particularly drawn to the images around letting go and helping others

She also included ‘family’ on one of the blank tiles and went on to discuss who was important in her life, the kind of relationships she had, and how these relationships helped her find purpose and meaning .

She was very engaged with the visual material and it enabled us to have a conversation I don’t think we would have had otherwise, exploring next steps that we could explore in therapy.

Talking Mats training is required to use all our Resources. We are running a Focused Foundation Training with the Exploring Spirituality Resource in September. For more information,
